Round 1 (FK)
I tried your collage prototype last night andhave some feedback. My first response is - it is great, I had fun making a couple collages. I was on a zoom call with my niece (12) and nephew (13) in Milwaukee last night and decided to ask them to try it out with me. So we had a little collage party. I know it is not you intended audience, but I thought it would be fun to see how they liked your the collage game.
Thoughts from my niece and nephew:
- Fun
- Family Game
- Use newspaper ads to collage with, especially food ads
- Creative
- Some of the cards they did not want to do, aka remove an item, cut in half - but they liked the results when they did the task. The look on my niece's face when I said cut the collage in half, she was like no, then when I said tape swap sides and tape it back together she was like ok with a big smile. They also got creative when I said cut an element and glue it on backwards, they said things like "oh I was cutting the backside of this heart, so I have to put the design side up"
- They kept asking to do one more card
- My sister-in-law sent me a text 15 minutes after we were done. "They loved that, can't stop talking about it!"
Thoughts from me:
- Rules were easy to follow and following the instructions on the cards were straightforward.
- I agree with everything my niece and nephew said. It was really fun and creative. I could see doing this with a group of people or family events.
- On the Rules card - I don't think it is necessary to add "most of them will be bad", it does not set a positive tone to start the game.
- On the Rules card - "These cards are just suggestions to generate collages" This is more a description, not a rule.
- I found it hard to get started because I wasn't sure what supplies I should have on hand. It might be useful to have a card with a list of suggested materials and tools. I started with some paper, tape and markers - then I had to add glue stick, junk mail, post it note, scissors, color tape. It would help get less creative people started. Once I got an idea of what I needed, it was fun gathering materials. This was also the case for my niece and nephew - hence the comment to use newspaper food ads.
- I ended up skipping more cards in the beginning. It was hard to remove an item when you hadn't started yet or "each element in the collage must be the same color" if I already have started the collage with many different elements. I know it is ok to skip cards or make your own interpretation of the cards, I just found it interesting that I was not using the top card all the time. I was sort of selecting the cards that would work best for my WIP collage. I wonder if there could be two decks of cards - one for the starting elements - and one more for the WIP collage. OR maybe you start with 3-5 cards and you use them in any order to get started, then select more cards. Just ideas.
- If you think the audience will be more artists and creatives, I think the card descriptions are good. I understood everything. If you think there will be a general audience, you many need to explain 'full bleed' and 'sand away elements'
